Sex Talk–My 14 & 16 year olds have watched most of the 5 seasons of Breaking Bad. My husband and I got sucked in and finished all 5 seasons in about 3 weeks. I loved the series, but was not pleased with a few of the sex scenes my kids watched.

I’m a huge, huge fan of Sex and the City (women dialog, fashion, New York, relationships, etc). The show Girls has been successful so I rented and watched the first season. OMG the sex scenes in Girls are obnoxious. I liked the writing and the characters, but boy the sex.

So here is my concern or question. Do I need to take the sex conversation to the next level(s)? We have made it a point to talk openly w/ our kids about many topics including sex.

Many of the recent sex scenes that my kids may or may not have been exposed to are too much. Now my kids have not seen Girls and I do attempt to monitor what they can watch, but I know they have seen enough to possible skew their view of what a healthy sexual relationship may look like. Even Opie Cunningham’s movie Rush, had sex scenes that I did not want my 14 year old to see, but he did.

So,do I have the talk? … and should I be concerned about saying too much?

Hi Caryn — well as you know I’m not a professional, but I think at the ages of 14 and 16 they are ready to hear everything. I suspect they aren’t going to want to have these types of conversations with a parent because it will be embarrassing, but I still think you should forge ahead. Boy we as parents have so much to deal with that our parents never had to. Sigh.
